About this deal

Fascinating collection of stories of women who identify as lesbian (the book capitalised it—Lesbian—which tickled me pink) and who were, or are, nuns. An older nun, she was both teacher and inspiration to Nancy Manahan, who was at the time in her first year at the Maryknoll Missionary Sisters’ Novitiate near St. Out of print for two decades, Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence, the explosive international best-seller, is back with a new foreword analyzing the unprecedented impact it had on the lesbian community and mainstream culture. The latest example of this has been the life of Walatta Petros, a 17th Century Ethiopian nun whose struggles to protect Ethiopian Christianity against the Catholic Church earned her a sainthood.

Many of the recollections take place as the Vatican II changes were being implemented, so you can see how differently the convents were reacting to this upheaval. The authors state that a majority of sisters are heterosexual, and say their book neither condemns nor condones sexual activity in convents. Out of print for two decades, Lesbian Breaking Silence, the explosive international best-seller, is back with a new foreword analyzing the unprecedented impact it had on the lesbian community and mainstream culture. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair. It's so interesting both for their stories of coming out to themselves (many of which were quite similar) but also for the diversity of convent teachings and for the glimpses of what happened after—after they realised their sexuality, after they acted upon it, after they left the convent (or didn't).Although originally published through an indie publisher, this book has since been reprinted several times and is available widely for anyone interested in exploring the relationship between religion and homosexuality. Legendary Swedish sex bomb Anita Ekberg stars as Sister Gertrude, a cruel nun who discovers depraved pleasure in a frenzy of drug addiction, sexual degradation and sadistic murder. Shortly after, Warner Books bought the rights for mass-distribution and spread the book far and wide with its second edition. Attempts to suppress, deny, threaten, or make guilty such natural tendencies will most likely not succeed and will cause pain and confusion. Second wave feminism is very much at work here, and while I can stomach the self-empowering language (and can ignore the rampant appropriation of Indigenous cultures once these women ‘find their way’), I can’t ignore the fact that this anthology needed a better editor.

Meaning the movement lost Republican women, housewives, and soccer moms afraid of what their husbands and family would think. First published in 1985, Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence by Rosemary Curb and Nancy Manahan is a nonfiction anthology with 51 accounts of lesbian nuns and ex-nuns, speaking on the topic about how their sexuality intersects with their vocations. My own particular interest has always been those landmark, ground-breaking memoirs of individuals whose acknowledgement of their homosexuality took place within the context of their religious faith, yet did not involve rejecting that faith totally, but rather striving to accept their sexuality as God-given and even God-approved and blessed, and where possible to impart that understanding to the religious communities to which they belonged. The book opens doors for anyone who’s ever felt an outsider, who ever felt they had to pass for mainstream,” said Curb, a 45-year-old associate professor of English at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. While 40 of the contributors to the book are no longer in religious communities, (the essays were selected from 400 submitted to the editors), seven women who are still in the convent contributed using pseudonyms, and two current nuns wrote under their own names after clearing the decision with their communities, Manahan said. Today that might seem suspiciously naive, but for girls growing up Catholic back then it made a lot of sense.

It’s also about breaking the rules, and that, Curb said, is the reason the topic has struck a chord with so many non-Catholics and non-gays. The editors were banned from an Eastern talk show last month when a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston read about the book and asked that the segment featuring Manahan and Curb not be aired, arguing that it “would be an affront to the sensitivity of Roman Catholics. At first, when I was young and dedicated, my conscience would get the better of me, and I would go to the chapel, fall on my knees, cry, and promise that I would never stray again.
